Custom lighting

I grew up around people who worked with their hands.  My Grandfather owned a tool and die shop which eventually evolved in my father’s business, Advance Heat Treating Co. in Fairfield, CT.  I was always fascinated by the amazing machines they had in the shop, like the Bridgeport Milling Machine, a relic we still have to this day, the hardening furnaces from the 40s that would glow white hot when they were opened, and the massive compressor that was always rumbling away in the background.  These men, using these tools were able to provide for 3 generations of our family.  They instilled in me an appreciation for quality workmanship and a respect for the time it takes to do something yourself.  With that in mind, started this venture to get back to that tradition of earning a living by making something with my own two hands. It has given me an opportunity to focus my creativity, the end product of which is my collection of rustic and industrial lighting and decor, designed and fabricated in my home workshop. I strive to create unique, high-quality lighting and timeless designs.

Hand painted items

{{ Where It All Began }}
It started with a mug. My old college roommate’s birthday was coming up, and I didn’t want to get her the same old things I’ve been throwing at her for years. Next thing I knew, a picture from Pinterest, a plain white mug, and some sharpies got me hooked on to what has now become one of the shop’s best sellers.

Now, a year later, I’m proud to provide each customer with the perfect gift for their loved ones, near and far, with quality paints and creative designs. I love designing new products and always look forward to what customers surprise me with in custom designs.

{{ Process }}

All items are hand painted by me with various paints, depending on the surface. Then they’re heat cured (mugs and glasses are baked in the oven, pillow covers and towels are ironed) to be as durable as possible. This means that each item is completely customizable, totally unique, and long lasting.

Street Art + Photography + Graphic Design

Kennected is a Mixed Medium “Green” Street Artist, Photographer and product of the 80s where he fell in love with graffiti and underground hip-hop culture at an early age sighting influences like “Wild Style” and “Beat Street”. With that love Ken always kept in the habit of writing but seldom took his talents to the walls until his college years. Kennected would go on to create logos and graphics for friends but still didn’t take the hobby seriously. Post college while visiting a friend in Long Island City Queens he saw a building called “5 Pointz” an open air outdoor museum known as the Graffiti Mecca. With a renewed passion for the aerosol arts Kennected set forth on a tagging/writing spree getting up with stencils and tags where ever and whenever from coast to coast. In 2012 Kennected ArtWrx was born as a result Ken selling his photography and a joint venture with Valkyrie Graffix when he and Kennected formed the Intelligent Vandals Cru. With using recycled items as well as his own photographs along with canvas to create original pieces, Kennected looks to stay on the forefront of the “Green” Street Art .

Painter, graphic designer

I’m a painter and graphic designer from Milford, CT. I am interested in texture and atmosphere. My creative process is a method of manipulation of imagery. Most of my digital art becomes subject matter for my paintings. It is a transformation that viewers can hopefully be inspired by to build an imaginary place for themselves.

Ultimately, my goal is to create imagery that bridges the gap between the tangible and intangible. From viewer to viewer, the bridge is different. And through ranges of subject matter, I’m continually trying to explore my own bridges.

Loom Weaving

The Weaving Workshop is committed to sharing the craft of weaving with everyone who is interested. A basic understanding of weaving is absolutely necessary for students interested in Interior, or Fashion Design. Weaving is also an empowering craft that enables people to create beautiful, unique and valuable products. Anyone can learn how to weave, and it is widely taught throughout the world. The therapeutic aspect of weaving makes it a suitable activity for people with disabilities, people recovering from addictions, reentering society or those who struggle with serious economic or social issues.. People with limited visibility and the blind can actually handle the looms with autonomy once they have been set up by an assistant. Children also engage with weaving quickly when instructed and generally demonstrate great interest.

Ruben Marroquin is a graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology who specializes in teaching basic weaving on 4 and 8 harness floor looms. He received a scholarship to further his studies on textiles at the National Atelier of Textile Art in Paris, France in 2010. With three years of working experience in the field of hand woven fabrics, Marroquin is thoroughly prepared to teach the basics of weaving on 4 to 8 harness and Dobby Looms.

Positive Paint
Painter

I came up with “Positive Paint” for a couple reasons, one being because of the mediums I choose to work with. The majority of my work is environment friendly…I make my own paint which is derived from fruit and vegetables, it’s a process and tricky to work with but the outcome is well worth it. My homemade paint has a great natural look and texture that would match with any decor. I also use acrylics, I prefer to paint on wood instead of canvas because I use a dry brush technique and the wood handles paint better. I really like the abstract form of the wood and detail in the grain itself. The wood I get is only from trees that are down due to storm damage.

The second reason “Positive Paint” was started is because of the concept of positive thinking. I turned my life around a full 360 degrees, it was alot of self help, determination, and hope but the main thing that needed work was my mindset. Art was always a emotional outlet for me and one of the things that helped me find myself. I do not make prints so every piece I create is one of a kind, its a part of me and who I am.

Cinder + Salt
Screenprinted apparel with a mission

Cinder + Salt was founded in January of 2014 when owner + chief designer, Rachel DeCavage, decided freedom + transparency needed to be more than just words. After opening and running a small town boutique for 2 years she decided to close up shop + buy out her dad’s print studio. In order to truly lower the carbon footprint of the cinder + salt product, she wanted to control every aspect of creating it.

The name, Cinder + Salt, was inspired by the residue of a weekend well spent; the scent of campfire on your clothes and the taste of salt water on your skin. Through Rachel’s hand drawn designs, she always aims to capture her appreciation for nature, whole living and authenticity. Cinder + Salt also offers custom screen printing services and strives to serve folks with the same passion for eco-friendly, sustainable, transparent products.

Social enterprise is a guiding principle behind Cinder + Salt and is committed to donating 1% of every sale to Evergreen Design Co. EDC is a 501c3 nonprofit organization Rachel founded in 2011. Their mission is to educate the community on, provide means to and promote a sustainable way of life through a focus on design.
